Medal of Honor : Pacific Assault

18 07 2009

mohpaMedal of Honor : Pacific Assault is a WWII-themed FPS game that’s way better than it’s progenitor, Medal of Honor : Allied Assault . The Germans are given a break this time, and now you have to face the even more crazier tropical jungle-dwelling Japanese forces.

It’s also important to say that Pacific Assault is in no way similar to Allied Assault. As I’ve mentioned in its review, in the first of the series you mostly go solo, but there are also sequences where you fight alongside teammates such as in Omaha Beach. But in Pacific Assault, you always have a squad to fight alongside you.

The game is in every way better than it’s forefather. The AI is way more aggressive, and it’s gameplay mechanics are improved as well. But that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have it’s flaws ! While you’ll constantly face hordes of Imperial Japanese soldiers, you can’t help but notice that sometimes they tend to act weird : such as clipping in stuff. But that doesn’t always happen. The AI will start banzai-charging at you with their bayonets when they run out of ammo, or when you get too close to them. They’ll come after you if you hide around too much, and their medic will heal their troops if you don’t finish them off quickly.

Uhh... who's there ?

Uhh... who's there ?

Speaking of medics, in MoHPA, you don’t walk on health packs or bottles all the time, instead, you have a corpsman in your squad that you’ll heavily depend on. It’ll take a couple of seconds for him to heal you, so you must find cover. As a squad, you guys must stick out for each other. So you’ll find that sometimes your squad mates will get hit and will fall, so you must pick him up, get him to cover, and call the doc. You also have a simple yet handy squad command system such as advancing, opening fire, retreating and rallying. But this doesn’t mean that you’re the boss… no, you have a superior to follow. You’ll only get to issue the commands on desperate occasions.

Fortunately, you actually have cinematics in the game, and a proper story. The storytelling is very profound, as cutscenes are really suggestive. You play as a marine, Thomas ‘Tommy’ Conlin over the course of several years. The campaign will take around 8-12 hours to complete, depending on the difficulty. What’s also cool is that the main menu theme will change depending on how far you progressed the game. The uniforms, and weapons will also change. Speaking of weapons, there are a lot of weapons in the game. At some point in the game you’ll even get to fly a plane. Though it’s quite tricky and you’ll want to finish the scenario asap.

Let's crash this partayh !!

Let's crash this partayh !!

The tropical Japanese environment is lush and beautiful. You’ll find that you’ll always have to go through the bush to avoid enemy road patrols, you’ll always storm villages, you’ll always ambush and get ambushed. The enemy will always outnumber you. You’ll be under machine gun fire lots of times. All these tense moments add to the realism. You can’t really say that the graphics are of epic proportions, they are still pretty good.

Not only do you get to visit the jungle, but you can also play through Pearl Harbor and other missions outside the jungle.

You’ll stumble across annoying things such as long loading screens, no matter how much you turned the settings down. You’ll always get appraised by your squad mates about what a good shot you’ve delivered to the enemy, even if you’re the only one that sees it. Or you’ll see that if you are a little far away from the squad, they’ll say : ‘Tommy’s on the move, let’s go, let’s go !’ all the time. The AI might also act weird, like I’ve mentioned before. But these things don’t heavily detract from the overall experience.

Ok, let's move out.

Ok, let's move out.

Extra things such as medals, hidden objectives, and the ‘realistic’ difficulty mode that disables your HUD and crosshair will make you want to come back and play again till perfection. Oh, and there’s also this cool at-the-verge-of-death moments if you’re down and your corpsman has ran out of bandages : a jap comes to you and stabs you. There are other cases too that I won’t spoil !!

The multiplayer features 3 modes : classic free for all and team deathmatch, but there’s also a mode called invader. This is like a campaign scenario in multiplayer, where you must blow up objectives, radio HQ or retrieve intelligence. It’s pretty fun, and there’s an auto-matchmaker that connects you to a random server if you don’t want to browse the lobby.

Overall, the excellent campaign, realistic tropical atmosphere and overall great gameplay and multiplayer make up for small flaws such as quirky AI and long loading times.

Medal of Honor : Allied Assault

8 06 2009

medal of honor coverMedal of Honor : Allied Assault introduced me to the historic FPS gameplay. It’s a fine game from EA, which at that time wasn’t such a flopmaster, which deserves its ‘Grandaddy of Historic Shooters’ title.

First of all, let’s clear some things up. You might expect the game to be like a Call of Duty-type shooter. Well, in some ways it is, but in most ways, it isn’t. In fact, Medal of Honor : Allied Assault is more of a spy-ish game where you have to infiltrate/spy/sabotage Nazi stuff. So you’ll seldom fight with teammates, and you’ll only fight in a full-scale battle in Saving Private Ryan-inspired Omaha Beach mission. Why inspired by Saving Private Ryan ? Because the Omaha Beach mission is exactly like in the movie. More like copied from Saving Private Ryan.

Hey ! I've never seen you before !

Hey ! I've never seen you before !

Anyways, Medal of Honor : Allied Assault is a traditional historic FPS game like Call of Duty 1. You won’t find anything special in singleplayer, other than the actual campaign and medals awarded to you. Multiplayer is dull like most games of its generation.

In singleplayer you’ll go through the campaign where you’ll go solo most of the time, with cool briefings by an awesome narrator, and simple objective-based tasks like in Call of Duty. The campaign probably will take you 8 hours to complete (can’t exactly remember since I’ve played it a long time), depending on the difficulty level you choose. There isn’t any emotional connection to the campaign’s characters, possibly only the fact that you want to prevent your teammates from dying. Medals are awarded to you after completing a major mission.

Ihre Papiere bitte !

Ihre Papiere bitte !

The multiplayer, like I said, is a classic lobby->server choosing->play ! type of multiplayer. There are a lot of weapons to choose from, and you can play as the Allies or the Axis. There are a lot of maps too. You can even choose what type of soldier costume you want to play with.

The graphics aren’t that special, but pretty good for a game released in 2002. Sound effects are good, voice acting is good, overall it’s a good game ! So I recommend you try it out if you emphasise old shooters. But of course, most people tend to buy newer, better games, for they didn’t waste money on an ultra-computer for nuttin’

Call of Duty 2

19 03 2009

256px-call_of_duty_2_box

Call of Duty 2 is an awesome, realistic FPS set in World War II, from 3 different perspectives. You can play from a Russian private’s view of the war against the Germans in the east, two British men (an infantry lieutenant and a tank commander) from the war against the Africa Korps, and one from an American battling throughout France, into Germany, ranging from D-Day to the crossing of the Rhine.

Call of Duty 2 does an excellent job at presenting you the struggle of mankind at that period. The battles are intense and full of suspense. The characters feel so real, both Allies and Axis. The AI is very aggressive, so it’ll try to kill you no matter what. You’ll often hear British troops yelling ‘Jerries !! On the rooftop at 12 o’clock !’, or Germans yelling  ’Sanitater !!!’. The sound effects are awesome. Each tank movement sound feels so realistic. Each environment is lively and full of surprises ! Flak cannons, MG-42’s, Tiger Tanks, Shermans, Panzers, desperately fighting in each battlefield.

In the campaign, you’ll start with your first training mission as a Russian. Then the real campaign unfolds. After you’re halfway in the campaign, you unlock the British one. After you unlock the British one, you unlock the American campaign. And after that, you can start the game over with a higher difficulty level, and using different tactics and strategies !

2

While there really isn’t no actual story, more like progressive missions of sorts forming a campaign, it’s still awesome to listen to other characters around you, and hearing Fritz desperately trying to fend you off.

The multiplayer will keep you busy for a while as well. The huge selection of maps and servers will keep you glued to the screen.

Overall, the extremely credible characters, realistic World War 2 atmosphere, competitive multiplayer and beautiful graphics for a game at that time makes Call of Duty 2 a bloody fine game to play.

Company of Heroes

11 03 2009

927618_66555_frontCompany of Heroes was one of my first WWII RTS games I’ve ever played, and certainly one of the best. Any game made by Relic must be a good game, this one definitely is !

Company of Heroes introduces WWII to you from a strategic point of view. It does a good job at it too ! It’s splendid graphics, sound, voice acting and gameplay elements makes a battle very lively. Too bad there are only 2 factions to play. As you might have expected, the allies and the axis.

Company of Heroes, unlike other RTS games, isn’t about training a worker and gathering resources and that stuff, instead, you must capture different types of points (fuel, ammunition) in order to produce units. Therefore you can’t relax in your cozy base, you must get straight into the action from the beginning. This keeps you fresh all the time and prevents you from getting bored, which is real smart.

There is only one campaign however, from the allies point of view which is kind of disappointing. Sometimes we also want to be the ‘bad guys’ too ! The campaign can sometimes get boring, cause it’s somewhat repetitive, although there are certain twists and different maps and such, but it’s still the same goal : shoot the Kraut !

However, you can play the Axis in a skirmish game, and I personally prefer them due to their more complex gameplay.

1

The sound effects are great too. Voice acting is superb. When you click a unit you don’t get ‘Yes sir?’ and when you move him ‘Ok sir’ all the time, it’s more varied, above all that, the Axis speak in a German-English accent, which is cool. Sometimes, the units swear, joke around and stuff like that which makes you feel that you’re really in a WWII battlefield.

The multiplayer is neat as well ! It’s simple, yet extraordinary. You won’t get bored of it !

2

Due to it’s amazing graphics, voice acting, sound effects and gameplay elements, Company of Heroes is a must for all those WWII strategy fans, you won’t get bored of it anytime soon, and I guarantee that it’s worth your money.
